today we had the chance to go pick fresh blackberries at a home my husband has listed (he's a realtor:O). the owners don't live there anymore and so the bush has just been sitting there, getting very overgrown. all those berries going to waste, we just couldn't have that. so we stopped over and gathered as many as we could...at least a couple pounds. when i was young, my family would take day trips and go pick wild blackberries. i remember that so clearly. we did alot of that kind of stuff and i love the memories i have from those experiences. it's something i want my kids to have memories of too. so anyway....back on track. the one thing i didn't remember about picking berries is how prickly they are. i'm talkin, thorns everywhere! they were catching my hair, shirt, pants, and not to mention a bunch of my skin. ugh. i didn't bring gloves so i tried to be very careful, but i wasn't very successful. but our persistance and sacrifice paid off in the form of plump, sweet berries. a few for snacking, some for cereal, maybe for some muffins, and definately some for cobbler!

when we got home, i did not have anything planned for dinner. i'd picked up a couple tenderloin steaks the other day so i knew i wanted to do something with those. i skimmed my "cooking pleasures" magazine and i came across a recipe for beef skewers. they were so easy to whip up and delicious too so i thought i'd share it. if you try them out, pleast let me know what you think.
enjoy!!!
1/2 c mayo
1 T cider vinegar
1 T lemon juice
dash of ancho chili powder (regular is fine) plus 1/2 teaspoon, divided
1 T smoked paprika (i used regular)
1 T packed brown sugar
1 t ground cumin
3/4 t garlic salt
1 1/4 lb beef sirloin steak (1 inch thick)
6-10 wooden skewers (12 in long)
soak wooden skewers in water for 30 minutes
- combine mayo, vinegar, lemon juice, and dash of chile powder (i used more than a dash to get the flavor i liked) in a small bowl. cover and refrigerate (sauce can be made 1 day ahead)
- combine paprika, brown sugar, cumin, garlic salt, and remaining 1/2 t chili powder
in another small bowl. rub mixture onto steak, pressing to make it stick
- heat grill. cut steak into 1/4 in thick strips. thread steak onto wooden skewers. grill, covered, over medium high heat or coals 4-6 minutes for med-rare, turning once. (we cooked longer cause our pieces were thicker and we like MED :O)
serve with sauce.
throw in some corn on the cob and roasted potatoes and you got yourself a yummy meal!

Hey, I'm so glad that before it says to put the meat on the stick you are supposed to soak the stick for 30 minutes. Several months ago we had some of the teens' parents over for a meeting and I was going to be a wonderful hostess by making beef, chicken, and shrimp kabobs and I got no note about soaking the stick so needless to say the sticks burned up and we had stirfry rather than kabobs. I did learn my lesson!!
I LOVED picking berries when I was little. I ate almost all of them I picked but I still loved it. Rasberry's and Gooseberry's ecspecially! I don't remember every picking blackberries but I sure love them!Glad you guys had a good time!
Thanks for the kabob recipe. I'll definitely have to try that!
those kabobs sound yummy. they will go on my list of things to try.
It was really good. Nice job babe!
The corn was off the hook!
I wish we had gotten a picture of you kids when we picked blackberries on our way back from Oregon. You all had "black" circles around your mouths from where you ate the berries, and it didn't come off for two days. It was fun.
Good 1ce as ever was
