a bit annoyed

i just got home and turned on the tv to catch the end of american idol. i'm gonna be straight up with you. i was in shock. there they were, the final 8, singing a song called "shout to the Lord." i'm not sure what exactly i felt but an emotion came over me. i know it was not because of the song or the singers. granted, it was beautiful with the choir back up and all, but this was an emotion of deep frustration. i felt like they were taking a song that is sacred to the christian believer and turning it into just another performance. Yes it was for their "give back" campaign which i'm all for, but why that song? here are the words...

My Jesus, my Saviour
Lord there is none like You
All of my days I want to praise
The wonders of Your mighty love

My comfort, my shelter
Tower of refuge and strength
Let every breath, all that I am
Never cease to worship You

Shout to the Lord
All the Earth, let us sing
Power and majesty
Praise to the King
Mountains bow down
And the seas will roar
At the sound of Your name

I sing for joy at the work
Of Your hand
Forever I'll love You
Forever I'll stand
Nothing compares
To the promise I have
In You

can you imagine the american idols singing this? it doesn't seem right. now i don't know if darlene zschech, the writer and singer of the song, was in on it, but the darlene i've known about, the gal who has this to say on her website....

" If we can get up on the platform and if we can praise Him with our glorious song but we can't serve Him with extravagant lives then something is wrong with our message."

...would absolutlely disapprove. you cannot tell me that all those people are christ followers. living for him daily and pursuing his will. now, i cannot speak for them and there just may be a few, but i just felt disappointed. yeah, i'm sure i'm overreacting but i feel strongly that a person should live what they say they believe and to me, singing a song like this should be in accordance with how you live your life. (not that there aren't many people in many churches all over the world that have sang this not meaning one word.) i don't know. just had to get it off my chest. i just know that something did not feel right about it. what do you think. please, i'd love your feedback, whether you agree or disagree.

that is weird. i just got done writing the opposite thing on my blog. no they aren't all christ followers and living for him but
#1-there were a whole mess of people that had to learn that song and we don't know how many of them actually listened to the words and had a seed planted.
#2-there was a whole mess of people that heard it on their televisions. the majority probably thought absolutely nothing of it other than it was a nice song, however there is that small percent who may have thought it was a catchy tune and will try to download it so they can listen to it again. if they are like me they also may want to know who sings it which could lead them to darlene's website and then to a relationship with the lord. that may be far fetched but nothing is too big for our god. in these times we are living in i am all for the message getting out there any way it can. they may have used it as just another performance but our lord can use it for good.

i am stepping off my soap box now :o)

I too, really love that song. Your zeal and passion for the Lord is duly noted. However, consider this...my friends who made it to American Idol in the first couple of seasons said that all songs have to be approved by the actual artists to be used on the show. So maybe this specific artist thought it would be a good way to "shout" to millions of people. Even though American Idol is "of the world", I am SO moved by music. So maybe that song was able to move some unbelievers?

i came home tonight and caught the last bit of idol, too. i, too, was thrown off by the choice of song. almost like i didn't hear ryan seacrest right when he said, "we'll leave you now with the your idols singing "shout to the Lord". i was like "wha?"

i am not sure you noticed or if you caught it, but mariah carey was up before them singing quite a spiritual song about the Lord never leaving nor forsaking. in fact the last word of the song was "Jesus".

i agree with you, jen, when you said it's more important to plant the seed than to police the entertainer. i get that. in fact, when i was up close in shock watching the tv, i was moved by the performance because it was beautiful and powerful as it should be and i felt like the idols were quite reverent with the song, even if they didn't know they were being.

but i also see steph's point. i take issue when the name of the Lord is pulled out of the hat every now and again in order to raise awareness and money for a global catastrophe. here you have a show, that if a contestant did have a relationship with Jesus, and therefore picked a song that reflected that... they would be perceived as self-indulgent. in fact, i remember that exact thing happening, when mandisa came out and sang a spiritual song that reflected her faith and she was voted off the next week.

it's the double standard that weirds me out and doesn't sit right in my spirit. but on the other hand, our God is big and even though he doesn't need the PR from a secular show, he is big enough to not let it go void.

i like this soapbox thing... i think i'll just sit here awhile!

"...What has been will be again,
what has been done will be done again;
there is nothing new under the sun...." Ecclesiastes 1:9

Mark Batterson says, "Life is an endless string of opportunities."

Colossians 4:5 says, "Make the most of every opportunity..."

As I see it, whether anyone agrees or disagrees with it...God has created an Opportunity for millions of folks to hear a message and potentially wonder who this Jesus really is?

We never know?? So to be assertive I will say...it really doesn't matter whether I liked it or not =) =)....

I appreciate your personal convictions though and that's what generates good dialogue.

I just left a comment on Jen's blog about this. I'm kind of with you - Steph. It didn't sit right with me. I did not feel the "Spirit of the Lord" in that song. It kind of felt to me, like they were taking the Lord's name in vein.
I think we have to be so careful how we use God's name - whether it' s in a thank you speech, prayer, or a song.
That song was not sung in a prayerful reverent way to our most Holy God. It was sung as a performance - that's all. I think maybe one or two of the performers might have meant something when they sang it - but the rest were purely trying to do a good job in my opinion.
I just don't want to see Christian songs start to become a "cool trend" - when they mean so much more.

hmmm...all great points. i'm not one to sit on a soapbox, however brett and i were both in shock by last nights perfomances. i love that mariah sang it too. who knows if the producers picked that song or the creator, it doesn't really matter. what matters is millions and millions of people watched that show and if out of that 20 people were touched and dig deeper and reach out or go to church or download that song...it worked. In the big picture i ask...does it really matter how you found the Lord or how your spiritual journey began or is it just that you found him and began truly living your life as God intended Christians to live? i give a shout out to american idol for closing with that song. i was proud of them. of all the songs they could have chosen they chose one about our Holy God, whether it was a perfomance or not... people listened. now we can just pray that people were touched. ok...off soapbox now.
